30 Days of Prayer- Day 11- Employment/ job

Matthew was a tax collector, Deborah was a judge and a prophetess, Peter was a fisherman, and Jesus worked as a carpenter. Jobs have existed forever. In fact, Adam could have been considered a farmer and a zookeeper! That’s a bit of a stretch I guess, but my point is, jobs are important, paid or not. Things need to get done, and we all work to make things happen in the world.

If you don’t leave the house and get a paycheck each week, you still have a job. Stay at home moms and dads have jobs too. If you are a full time caregiver to a parent or other loved one, you have a job. If you work every day at anything, I would call that a job. And they all count. They’re all important.

Day 10- Pray over your job

Today’s focus is praying over our jobs.

I have a new position at my job. I needed to increase my income and I had been trying to figure out how to move forward. I looked around for something different, and even answered an ad that I thought would be a good fit. I never heard back either way, and was beginning to wonder what to do. It should have been a good second income and I was a little disappointed that it never materialized. I finally decided to talk to someone about getting more hours at my current job, and found out that there was a recent opening for a full time position.

As a stay at home mom, I had not worked full time for many years, and, in fact, I only recently took a job outside the house where I had a schedule and had to work year-round. So, I decided to apply for the position. It meant a significant change in my daily routine and it meant that I would be gone twice as many hours a week. I wasn’t sure if I would even get it.

I truly wanted to leave it in God’s hands.

A full week went by, and I was offered the position. It came with a raise and more hours, which is what I had been needing, so I accepted. I’m believing that God will help me get through the transition and that He knows right where He wants me.

When we want to make changes in our jobs, it can be scary. There are a lot of variables. Is the pay going to be enough? Is it the right amount of hours at the right times? Will it be somewhere we want to spend all that time each week? Only He knows what is coming up next for us, and it is wise to pray about what we should do next.

Are you looking for a new job? Maybe you aren’t working right now and you need to find something. Ask God to lead you in the right direction.

Ask Him to help guide your active search and pray about the decisions you need to make about where to look.

I have heard people talk about job transitions that were great and others that were not good. Praying about the situation, and leaving it to God to help bring us the right employment at the right time is the best way to insure that we are where He wants you.

Maybe you are somewhere you are planning to stay for awhile.

You can pray too. We can all serve God at work, even if it’s not considered missions or ministry related.

There are opportunities to make a positive impact on people regardless of the job we have.

I remember staying home doing school with my kids for many years, trying to keep my head above water. There was a lot to do. But, by taking care of the house and taking care of the needs of the family, I had a purpose. In that season, that’s where God had me. I had to sometimes remind myself that my job was important, and that it was my divine purpose for that moment.

Is your job a challenge?

Is it difficult to stay joyful while you are there? Try to do what you can to avoid falling into negative habits. Work at being a positive influence to those around you. Keep focused on doing your job to the best of your ability and if you have trouble, pray that God shows you better, more efficient ways to do your work. If you are really struggling with anything, ask God to bring you some help. Know that you are not alone, and you can ask Him to guide you so that things run smoothly each day.

If you have a job where you work alone, remind yourself that your work is important too.

We pass by people every day who do important work that we may not even know needs to be done. There are people working below the city streets. There are people working up on top of buildings (fixing roofs, air conditioning units, etc.). There are people who work in the basements of buildings, fixing the equipment that controls the water and electrical and other important things. There are people who water the plants in your office buildings, people who deliver food to restaurants and schools, and others who stop in and check on people who live alone. Everyone has work that is important no matter how you do it.

You can be a blessing to other people every day at work, no matter what you do for a living.

I encourage you to make God a part of your work day. Pray for the people around you while you are at lunch. Try to encourage the new person. They’re probably just trying to find their way too. Throw away someone else’s mess in the break room. Or, just be positive at your job. Work can be a blessing when we make it about blessing others.

God,

I ask that you help me to do well in my new job. Thank you for helping me to find a place where I feel at home. Lord, help me to know how long to stay, and when (or if) I should ever move on. Thank you for providing me with an opportunity to serve you each day, and help me to see those opportunities. I ask that you help me to get along with people. Show me how to engage those around me in a positive and life affirming way so that I can show them your kindness through me.

Amen
