If you do not currently have your own children, this post is for you too.
We all have a beautiful opportunity to shape the lives of the young people around us.
Please take this opportunity to think of the young people in your life. Maybe you have a niece or nephew who could use your prayer support. Are there children in your neighborhood, or maybe young people you work with? Do you attend a church that supports an orphanage or maybe even a missionary family who has children you can pray for? Are you planning on becoming a parent, or are you or someone you know adopting a child soon?
As the adults in their lives, praying for the kids we know is a really great way to help them at the same time as we are giving them space.
Day 19- Praying for the Children in Your Life
I am a mother of two adult sons. They are transitioning into a very exciting time in their lives, and I am learning to step out of the way so they can become the men that God made them to be. In an effort to be as transparent as I can be, I’ll admit this is a very hard time for me. There comes a time in every parent’s life when we need to let kids figure things out. Sometimes it’s hard to do that, but when step back and let them try, often they will surprise us and prove that they heard the things we were telling them after all.
If you want to see more, I wrote about praying over your children in an earlier blog post: https://intogreaterthings.com/praying-for-your-children/
Children have a lot of thing vying for their attention right now. There are so many things going on in their lives. There are the sports and after school activities, but add to that the smart phones and computers and that leaves very little true down time. When I was a young person, we only had shared telephone lines and letters to communicate with. Now, young people have access to everyone in their lives through text, email, social media, and all kinds of video chat services. Everyone they know is literally right in their pockets.
As adults, take a moment to think about the constant input from the outside world that our kids must process. It even feels overwhelming for me sometimes. Imagine, as a young person, what it is like to ‘visit’ all of your friends at all hours of the day and night. As adults, we do it too, but in the world today, a young person is still figuring out where they fit in their world, and that is a lot of extra voices to hear at once!
As adults, we can appreciate the benefits of being unplugged. We realize the feeling of being overwhelmed by the media surrounding us every minute of every day. Some of the young people today have never known anything different. A good thing to pray for the children that are part of your life is for them to have a sense of balance. Maybe we can all pray that over ourselves a little more too.
Coming up in the next posts, a few more specific prayers for the children in your life.
This is my prayer for today:
God,
I want to pray over the children in my life. I ask you to put your hand of protection over these young people. Guide them in their lives. I ask that you give them peace in their lives, and give them the sense of awareness to know they need you. God, please cover the kids in my family. Help them to want to know you more. I pray that they feel loved and cherished. Also, I ask you to bless and protect the children in our church. God, help us to notice them, to give them love, and help us to show them they are valued. Thank you for my children. Lord, you know where they are right now, and what they are doing. I pray that you protect them. Guide their choices every day. Help them to know you more.
Amen
