30 Days of Prayer- Day 22- Their Choices

Children have many choices to make in their lives. Through all different stages, there are various kinds of decisions. At a young age, children need to decide if they are going to obey our rules. As they age, they have to decide on things like whether or not to follow the crowd in a peer pressure situation, or if they will pull away from the pack and do the right thing when that might be difficult. When they become more independent, children decide what they will do with their personal time, the kind of effort they will put into their school work, how they will spend their money, how to treat the people around them, and all sorts of other things.

Ask God to guide them in their decisions.

When kids get closer to adulthood, their choices have a bigger impact on their future. Our children make decisions on who they spend time with, which car to buy, what college or trade school to apply to, what job to take, who to live with, and some may even consider joining the military. Those decisions impact their future decisions, and those affect the next part of their lives, and so on down the line. It becomes important to make the best choices, so that they stay focused, and hopefully live their lives the way that God has for them.

Day 22- Praying for the kids in our lives and the choices they make

We can only give kids so much advice when it comes to their decisions. We can help them weigh their options, we can guide them, and we can give them the information they need to make an informed choice, but ultimately many of their decisions are up to them.

We should pray that our kids seek God’s will for their lives, and that it helps them make informed decisions.

It is important for us to lead by example too. When our kids were young, we did not spend a lot of time seeking God’s will for our lives. At a pivotal point in our marriage, we walked through a time of transition and realized that it was important to make God part of our life in a more meaningful way,. As the kids got older, they witnessed different times in our lives when we needed to make a change. It wasn’t a conscious choice to teach them, but over time, they saw that seeking God’s will in different circumstances was part of the process to making any major life decisions. We got into a habit of praying over major choices, and then even many of the smaller decisions were considered with God’s help and guidance. I have since spoken to our kids about the necessity to ask God for help in these areas, and I pray that they learn the value in it.

There is a familiar passage in the Bible that is quoted often when speaking of the future. Jeremiah the prophet spoke these words from the Lord in his letter to the exiles in Babylon:

Jeremiah 29:11-13

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”¹

We can do something very meaningful for our children by explaining that God wants what is best for them, and reminding them that they can ask for His help whenever they need it. It’s good to let them know that God is faithful to provide that help when we are trusting enough to ask.

My prayer for today:

Dear God,

Today I would like to pray for my children’s future. You know the plans that you have for them. You have given them certain gifts and specific personality traits that could be used for your glory. Lord, please continue to guide them through their lives. I ask that you protect them from wrong directions, and close doors that you do not want them to walk through. Lord, I know the pain that bad decisions can cause. I know some of the choices I made in my own life were not the best, and I thank you for protecting me in those times. God, help me to be a good example of how to trust in you. I lift my kids up to you today, and I ask that you be with them when they need you. God, I know that you will answer them when they seek you. Help them to stay on the lighted path through their lives and protect them in their daily walk. You are a faithful and loving Father, who cares for them so much. Thank you for never leaving their side. Lord, help them to remember to always seek your will for their lives when they have a choice to make. Thank you Father,

Amen
