What does your neighborhood look like? Do you live among a bustling city, with cars, trucks and bicycles going by outside your building? Are there long rows of houses, similar to yours, with tall trees along the boulevard and sounds of people going about their daily business outside? Do you live in a neighborhood with just a few houses, far apart with mailboxes at the ends of their driveways? Or maybe you live somewhere out in the country, with miles between you and the next neighbor.
All of us live in different areas.
I live among a bunch of houses on straight, paved city streets with sidewalks and street lights. I grew up on windy gravel roads, with no city lights in sight, and wild animals wandering through the backyard.
There are so many types of neighborhoods. One thing remains the same. No matter where I lived, I always had neighbors. Some were so close I could hear the bedroom radio through an open window. Others were so far away, I couldn’t even see if they had cars in their driveways.
We have all types of neighborhoods. If you live really far out in the country, you may even consider your town your neighborhood!
No matter who lives nearby, we share something in common with them, because we are all from the same town.
Today is about the people around us. Let’s take a moment to consider them, and lift them up to the Lord.
Day 24- Praying for your neighbors
If you live close to your neighbors, you can easily think of the faces and the names of some of them. Pray for them by name if you know them. Maybe you don’t know them very well. Many of us can think of a conversation or two that we have had with the people living nearby. Maybe you know of a health challenge someone told you about. Have there been any birthday parties or family gatherings they have been talking about? Pray for the members of their families and ask God to bless them and watch over their family.
If you don’t know your neighbors, either because you are far away, you haven’t had a chance to talk to them a lot, or you just moved in, pray for the people directly around you. Pray for God to help them in their lives. Pray for your relationship with them too.
Good relationships with the people that live by are a blessing.
Living so close to other families is sometimes difficult for people. I have been blessed to live somewhere now that I really appreciate the people around me. But, I have been in more challenging places before. I have also heard stories of ongoing feuds between neighbors. It can make things very unpleasant for everyone involved. You can pray for your neighbors, and ask God to help you get along with those around you. If there is something specific that you want to ask God to help with, today’s prayer is a good time to bring those things to the Lord.
If there are any current issues you are dealing with, pray for peace.
Ask God to show you how to deal with those issues. Seek Him for the way to resolve any ongoing conflicts, or just pray for peace between the parties involved. Sometimes little things become problems between people because there is a struggle going on outside of that issue. Small things become big things when people are hurting. Pray for God to help those around you to live in harmony, and if there are things they are going through, ask that He continues to watch over them and help resolve any issues in their lives.
Along with the people who live nearby, there are other things to pray about.
Are there any issues currently coming up at the community meetings? Are there any major projects being planned? You can ask God to put His hand over those kinds of decisions.
A few glances at an online neighborhood group or local section in the paper can reveal more prayer needs too. There are sometimes benefits being held for people in need. Maybe there is a new family moving in that needs your help. There are always things to pray about in your neighborhood.
Maybe you are currently looking for a new place to live.
Whether it is a short term rental or a house you are planning to buy, pray that God helps you to make a good decision as to where you choose to move. There are many things to consider when moving somewhere new. Having the right neighbors can make a big difference in the way you live your lives.
Dear God,
Thank you for my neighbors. I ask you to bless the people around me. You know the challenges of those who live close by. There are some different needs right now, and I ask for peace, protection, healing, and provision for those who live close to me. For those who I do not know, I ask you Lord, to cover them with your love. Show them your grace where they need it. Protect anyone who is struggling financially, and help them to get through this trying time. God, for those around me who are far from you, I ask that you make yourself known to them. If you feel that I may be a messenger of your peace, please help me to know how to do that.
For the people who are trying to sell their homes right now, and the people looking to buy in this neighborhood, I ask you to protect those decisions. Guide those people into the right places. God, I know from experience that where we live can have such a huge impact on our daily lives and the people we meet and work with. I ask you to please provide the right homes for the right people. For those who are moving away, I ask that you go with them and help them to find the right place to move to.
Protect my neighborhood and the people in it today. Help guide those who make the decisions for the residents in this area, and help them to make the right ones. I ask you to be with all of those around me in their lives today.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
