The community that surrounds you is made up of homes, businesses, city parks, libraries and gas stations, grocery stores and schools, and all kinds of other things.
There are many prayer needs in our communities. We can pray that the people around us have happiness in their lives. We can pray that they find salvation and learn how to put their hope in God. We discussed neighbors yesterday in day 24. Today, I’m going to broaden the scope and talk about how to pray for the area that you live in.
Day 25- Praying for your Community
There is so much more community information available now than there used to be. There are many different community groups online, and local news stories are covered on TV and on internet news apps every day. And there are still neighborhood fliers, local bulletin boards, and messages pinned up at the local coffee shop. If you wanted to know what was going on in your community, it would be easy to find out.
I grew up out in the country just outside a larger metro area.
We didn’t really know a lot about what was going on in town then. There were some meetings about road improvements, various things going on with the school board, local elections, and other types of things. But, coming from a more remote area, we didn’t spend a lot of time in the community we lived in. We were a little too far out of town to really connect a lot, and my sister and I were involved in county wide extra-curricular activities and clubs. I guess we just didn’t know a lot about the area we were in, because we were spending a lot of our time elsewhere.
I know some people who live in small towns.
There seems to be an ongoing list of events there. It seems that if you wanted to get involved, there are plenty of opportunities. It’s really a great thing to get to know everyone. The people I know who come from small towns seem to know all of the business owners, the people who run the government offices, and the city staff. If you live in an area like that, there are likely many prayer needs to bring to the Lord today when you pray.
Along with the fun activities, visiting the people in town, and connecting with the ones who keep things running, there are usually plenty of other needs in any size community.
Today, let’s pray together for our communities. What an amazing thing to think about people all around us praying for the people around them? We are called to pray about all kinds of things. We have covered a lot of them in the last three weeks or so.
Today, let’s take time to look beyond ourselves and see those around us.
We can pray for people who need help finding work.
It’s hard to be looking for a job or a different line of work. Pray that the people around you who are looking for employment find the right positions in the places where God wants them.
We can pray for people who are looking for housing.
Lately, the homeless population has gotten a lot of attention in the media. We have seen more of it around our area than we used to. We just visited somewhere that had a large homeless population. If there are homeless in your area, pray for solutions. If you are willing and able to serve, there are many ways to do that too. Reach out to your local church or government office. There should be people who can connect you with ways to help. Prayer is a great way you can help right now, right where you are.
God knows each one of those souls by name. God knows where they’re at. Today, pray protection and guidance over them. Ask Him to help them if they have addictions or mental illnesses. Pray for their shelter and their protection, as well as provision for them. For those around us who need stability in their lives, pray that God helps them to know the right steps to take.
We can pray for the leaders of the groups who serve people in our area.
We can ask God to help our city leaders come up with the right solutions and plans for our cities. If your community has any special challenges, you can pray for God’s hand on those things. The community around you is made up of lots of people, and with that, there are many spiritual, social, economic, administrative and infrastructural details that need to be addressed. All of these things are things we can pray for.
My prayer for today:
Dear God,
Thank you for the community around me. I pray for the leadership here, that you would give them wisdom and good solutions to any issues in our area right now. Give them the foresight to see how to address the future growth in this area in a way that is beneficial to all those living here. Please continue to provide safe housing solutions to everyone who chooses to call this area home. Help the leaders in the area to understand the people who live here in a healthy way, so they can serve everyone well.
There are so many people in this community. Many of them are hurting. Please protect them from anything they may suffer from. I ask you to send help to those who need it. You know each and every one of the people who live here by name. You know all of their specific struggles. Please be with them today. Help them to have joy in their lives today.
Also, Lord, bring revival to this area. Put a desire in the hearts of those around me to know you, and build in them a desire to learn about you and to serve you more. Thank you again Lord for bringing us here.
Amen
