Great to have you back here on day nine.
When I started to write down the list of prayers for this series of blog posts, I felt such a strong connection to this prayer point.
I look back to when I was younger and it seems like people were a little more gentle to each other then. If there ever was a time for this prayer, it’s now.
Day 9- Prayer to help you to love others
I will openly admit that I am not always the most patient person. I want to be perfectly honest and tell you that I tend to be crabby when I’m trying to get things done. I also mutter under my breath about other drivers and sometimes get irritated at people when I’m out shopping.
If you aren’t that way, may God continue to bless you with that strength.
I don’t want you the get the wrong impression of me. It’s not a constant problem, but I’m just trying to be up front with you. I need this prayer too.
If you have trouble seeing the good in those around you sometimes, or if your life is hectic enough to make you feel on edge when you are with other people, then today is for you. There are so many great songs out there that talk about loving people the way Christ loves. We sing them in our cars and sometimes even really feel empowered by them. I think that worship music is an incredible tool for helping us stay positive and uplifted.
It’s easy to walk away from a church meeting or a gathering of friends feeling like everyone around you is wonderful.
For those difficult times, it is important to ask God to fill us with His love for others. I really want to get better at showing my best self to the world. My prayer is that God shows me the people He has chosen for me to connect with each day, and that He gives me the eyes to see who is in need of a special word of encouragement.
We all have busy lives.
There are so many things to get done all the time.
At my current job, we are encouraged to spend an extra few minutes to help people if they need assistance with something. It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite things about working there. It has really given me an opportunity to get to see the good side of people. I am so amazed at the great people I have the opportunity to meet, just because there was time to stop and ask a few questions. It’s always worth the extra time.
So many of those around us are just people too…….we all are!
It’s so easy to assume that we have such different life goals and desires than everyone else. Our close friends and family make sense to us because we know them well, but outside of that group, we can tend to assume that the average person we share the world with is so different than we are.
What we should always keep in mind is that they are just people too. I know this seems so obvious. But, it seems like more and more, because our ‘inner circle’ comes with us on our devices in our pockets, we don’t reach out to the stranger on the street as much as we used to. It’s becoming easier and easier not to connect with others we don’t already know.
Ever talk to people on an elevator? It’s less and less common to start up a conversation now than it was when I was a little girl. There are some really great people around us every day and we just need God to help us remember how to reach out.
I want to do better.
We are called to love on another. That usually starts with a simple “Hi.”
It takes a little bit of effort, but it’s worth it in the end to share a little kindness with the world. Today, I want to ask God to help me be better at showing His love to the other people I see every day.
John 13:34-35 Jesus, speaking to his disciples says:
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”¹
I believe that God wants to reveal himself to others by using us, the ones who know Him. Ask Him today to help you to do that. He is a faithful Father. He always comes through.
Dear God,
Today, I want to ask for help learning how to love people. We have so many great examples in the Bible of how to love one another. I ask that you come into my heart and help me to see the people around me the way that you see them. Sometimes it is a challenge for me to be who you call me to be. God, I thank you for the opportunities I am given to bring your kindness to the lives of others. I am surrounded by so many each and every day. I ask for you to help me to be kind when I don’t have a softened heart. Help me to see when I am presented with an opportunity to reach out to a fellow human being. Please help me to know what people need, and give me the grace to give it to them when you ask me to.
Amen
