Spring is a great time to begin again! Where I live, the winter has been a little different than usual. It started off being mild, followed by some bitter cold and well….snow. A LOT of it. Usually by now, the snow is starting to melt quite a bit. But this year, It feels like Spring is really far away.
I will say this…it is beautiful!!
There is no grass to mow, and the water bill is cheap because there are no plants to water outside. But its been pretty draining. Maybe it seems longer because I’m feeling a little stale in my mind.
Do you ever feel like you just need a fresh start?
There are times in my life when I feel mentally stagnant, but I have found that there really is something I can do about it.
We seem to get into these patterns, don’t we? We eat the same thing for breakfast, we take the same roads into town, we wear the same shoes to work….
For me, I usually find that I need to do something different, find something that feels fresher. Now, obviously going out shopping every time I’m in a rut isn’t terribly feasible. And to be honest, I’m too much of a home body for that anyhow. But, I do have a few different winter scarves and hats that I haven’t worn for awhile. I’ve also been known to rearrange my living room on occasion just to shake things up a bit.
If you know what I’m talking about, maybe its a good time to consider digging out one of your favorite mugs hiding in the cupboard. I found a beauty the other morning! I didn’t feel like washing up my favorite one, so I went looking for another ‘good one.’ And there was a gorgeous mug my husband bought me. Maybe it’s just me, but sometimes I just need to do something to change up my routine.
Even the little things can change the way we face the day.
All those things are helpful, but in reality, beyond the physical surroundings and the coffee cups, there is something so much more. When I get into a rut in my mind, there’s usually a reason. I find that when I neglect spending time in devotions and prayer, I am so easily nudged into the old thought patterns I had before I made God part of my life.
It is so easy to get back into those habits.
And I feel it.
When all the input I am receiving is negative and stale, that’s how I tend to start feeling. Those old pessimistic ways come flooding in to fill up the space where I used to keep my loving God.
So, how to begin?
Today was daylight savings time. We turned all the clocks ahead this morning (yes, our digital devices do it on their own, but I still have a few here that we need to do by hand!). Maybe it should be a symbolic gesture to start fresh.
I don’t have to feel stale or stagnant anymore. I can’t make the snow melt any faster, but I can make some decisions about how I feel today. It’s time to reboot my mind.
It’s the perfect time.
The season is changing and I’m going to change with it. I’m going to pull out my favorite old mug, sit down on my sofa with my Bible and my journal and put something fresh and new where there is a little too much blah. I know from experience that moments spent with God aren’t wasted, ever. I don’t have to mow or water plants, and the snow is already shoveled. So today, I am going to go sit down and invest some time in what really matters most.
